Las Cruces Kicks Off Monthly Film Forum at the Rio Grande Theatre

Las Cruces, NM - What is the current state of the Film Industry in Southern New Mexico? Are there any feature films scheduled to be shot in Las Cruces? Where can the works being produced by local filmmakers and students be seen? All these questions and more will be answered when the City of Las Cruces and the Doña Ana Arts Council launch a monthly forum for filmmakers and film enthusiasts alike, at the Rio Grande Theatre on July 13, 2011.

Called Film Las Cruces, the forum will be a gathering on the second Wednesday of each month, by an organized group of filmmakers, digital media artists, students and interested members of the community with the express purpose of showcasing local talent and, in turn, drawing film and television productions to Las Cruces. During each month's meetings, trailers for locally made films will be screened, alongside short films by student filmmakers, followed by Q&A sessions with the filmmakers and industry news as it pertains to our area. The general public is invited to become acquainted with the film community and hear about exciting new projects taking place in the Las Cruces area and throughout Southern New Mexico.

Already slated for screening on July 13th will be trailers for feature films which have been entered into the White Sands International Film Festival and will be screened during that event in August. Also on tap will be the teaser trailer for "Traficante," by Jose de Avila and Roger Wolski, which was shot here in March. The feature film is scheduled to begin shooting here in Las Cruces later this year. Other filmed presentations will be included as they present themselves.

"I am looking forward to providing local filmmakers with a venue to share ideas, show projects and present opportunities for employment for our film students and professionals, while at the same time bringing profits to our local businesses," says City of Las Cruces Film Liaison, Bill McCamey. "It's a great way to get the community involved so that we can dispel rumors and disinformation about filmmaking in New Mexico, while at the same time getting them up to speed on some of the exciting projects headed our way."

City Councilor Nathan Small is also a proponent of Film Las Cruces, stating, "We have a growing group of outstanding local filmmakers. This monthly gathering will showcase local talent and creativity in our community, and also help share technical resources among filmmakers." He also sees it as a viable means for creating commerce in Las Cruces. "I believe the local film industry can contribute to our local economy, and also enrich the lives and careers of local residents. Having seen other communities gain long term from a commitment to creativity and film making, I want to help bring the same benefits to Las Cruces."

The Rio Grande Theatre is located at 211 N. Downtown Mall, in Las Cruces. Doors open at 6:30pm and the presentation begins at 7pm. The event is FREE and open to the public.
