PHILIPPE STARCK DESIGNED SLS HOTEL SOUTH BEACH SET TO OPEN JUNE 14th: The hotel is set to debut this month after a $45 million makeover at the historic site of the former Ritz Plaza Hotel, an unrivaled beachfront location where Lincoln meets Collins; the property will rekindle the award-winning collaboration between sbe Founder, Chairman and CEO Sam Nazarian, creative icon Philippe Starck and James Beard Award-winning chef Jose Andres. However, joining the trinity of Nazarian, Starck and Andres is Lenny Kravitz and his team at Kravitz Design Incorporated (KDI), who will be designing the property’s penthouse suite and one of the ten pool bungalows. The SLS South Beach marks the return of iconic designer Philippe Starck, who helped create the original boutique hotel look with Ian Schrager in the 1980s. When you arrive at the hotel, you\'ll see an expansive terrace reminiscent of the outdoor cafés in Paris or Lake Como, Italy. Complementing an eclectic collection of furniture, which includes a red wheelbarrow bench, a faux tree trunk table and intricate iron-crafted pieces from Mexico are black and white Moroccan tiles. Starck’s ability to blend contrasting elements is showcased in the reception area of the hotel, which depicts a retro American summer camp; the reception desk will be fashioned from a distressed slab of wood, and the lighting will come from an antique wood kayak suspended from the ceiling, while vintage stills from camping trips long forgotten adorn the wall behind the reception area. For the guest rooms, expect a look befitting Madame de Pompadour\'s, Louis XV\'s legendary mistress – featuring generous doses of whites and pinks, taking a page from French aristocracy. The encore to the internationally acclaimed SLS Hotel at Beverly Hills, the SLS Hotel South Beach creates a “dream world” by blending Latin, Asian, and contemporary and art deco influences with captivating precision. MARLINS PARK IS THE FIRST RETRACTABLE ROOF BUILDING IN THE WORLD TO RECEIVE LEED GOLD CERTIFICATION: Marlins Park becomes the first retractable roof facility in the world to receive LEED Gold environmental certification. A plaque was presented by the U.S. Green Building Council on May 25, 2012 to mark the achievement. Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design in New Construction is a rating system that was designed by the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC) to guide and distinguish newly constructed, high performance buildings that have less of an impact on the environment. The Miami Ballpark District, comprising Marlins Park and four City of Miami public parking garages, set forth the initial goal of achieving LEED Silver Certification. By incorporating a comprehensive sustainability strategy throughout the design and construction process, including site selection benefits, water use reduction, energy use reduction, a recycling program, regionally-sourced and recycled content materials, construction waste management and care in the design of healthy interior environments, the Miami Ballpark District was able to earn Gold, surpassing the initial goal of LEED Silver. Marlins Park received 40 points toward LEED Certification – four more than Populous-designed Target Field, thus becoming the most sustainable new ballpark in the country. Many of Marlins Park’s LEED points were based on innovative design, construction and operations measures. For more information about the new Marlins Park, visit http://marlins.mlb-brochure.com/2011.
FREE FULL TROLLEY SERVICE IN DOWNTOWN MIAMI: The City of Miami has launched its long-awaited downtown trolley service making getting around downtown Miami and Brickell a whole lot easier. The free downtown rubber-tire trolley system will persuade people to “ditch the car and hitch a ride’’ for short jaunts to work, play, eat and shop. The orange-and-green, retro-style trolleys will run every 15 minutes and take passengers on Biscayne Boulevard south from the Omni district, across the Miami River and to the end of the Brickell financial and residential district, with marked stops at every block. The trolleys will also make three loops: one around Mary Brickell Village, another out to Brickell Key, and a third past Margaret Pace Park just north of the old Omni complex. Because the trolley will also stop at or near Metromover and bus stations, it will give downtown Miami a densely interconnected transit system unrivaled by any other city in Florida. The air-conditioned trolleys will run 6:30 a.m. until 11 p.m. every day but Sunday. Special runs will be added for Sunday Miami Heat playoff games. The downtown line’s debut comes six weeks after the city launched the first trolley route, around the Jackson Memorial Hospital health district and down to the new Miami Marlins ballpark. Ridership is averaging around 500 passengers a day outside game days, when the vehicles are carrying 2,000 people. The downtown and health district trolley lines will eventually connect along 14th Street, with additional routes planned for the future. Five years in the works, the trolley system is funded by a number of sources, including the city’s $2 million-a-year share of half-cent transit surtax money, $1.5 million from the state and $4.1 million in federal stimulus money. KOKORIKO NATURAL ROTISSERIE MAKES U.S. DEBUT IN MIAMI: Kokoriko, Colombia’s wildly-successful chain of restaurants specializing in rotisserie chicken, has partnered with veteran restaurateur and renowned chef Richard Sandoval to expand Kokoriko into the U.S. market with the launch of Kokoriko Natural Rotisserie. Making its U.S. debut in late-April 2012 in downtown Miami’s Brickell area, Kokoriko Natural Rotisserie has brought a new incarnation of Colombia’s affordable, fast-casual eateries to Brickell’s ever-growing restaurant and nightlife district. The company’s conviction has always been to give people a reason to unite around a dining table, so when Chef Sandoval, who is considered “The Father of Modern Mexican Cuisine,” was introduced to Kokoriko during a culinary excursion to Colombia, he fell in love with Kokoriko’s high-quality, affordable food. With Sandoval’s vision to create a chef-driven, modern interpretation of Kokoriko (a generic term for rotisserie chicken in Colombia) he keeps true to the essence of what makes Colombian diners have such an emotional bond to this chain of restaurants. For their flagship 3,000 square foot Miami location, housed on the street level of the Axis building in Brickell, the talented team at Miami’s SOW Design Studio has created a rustic yet modern look for the restaurant; accommodating 78 guests in the dining room and an additional 76 in the patio area. To ensure that Kokoriko Natural Rotisserie’s interior design is consistent with the brand’s style, a focal-point of the dining room will be an open-kitchen with a rotisserie oven. Here, designers have incorporated recycled materials and the craftsmanship of local artisans, such as walls covered in reclaimed wood from barns and brick, reminiscent of Colombia’s countryside. Table-tops made of petrified tree trunks will be accented by bench-style banquette seating. Hanging from the walls, over-sized mirrors will reflect bouquets of fresh flowers imported from Colombia, encompassing bright-colored roses, orchids and carnations. Chef Sandoval’s culinary repertoire has allowed him to become one of the world’s most influential Latin chefs. From fine dining to fast casual, the Mexico City native and James Beard Award nominee, has introduced diners of all walks to contemporary Latin cuisine. His restaurants explore every facet of Latin cooking while staying true to his culinary mantra “Old Ways, New Hands” by combining authentic Latin ingredients with international flavors and cooking techniques to create new and popular Latin dining experiences. MIAMI INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT’S NEW FRONT DOOR TO THE WORLD: Beginning in August 2012, international passengers flying American Airlines to Miami International Airport will be welcomed to the U.S. by a new three-level, 400,000-square-foot Federal Inspection Service (FIS) area twice the size of the existing Concourse E facility. The dazzling new area is located in the middle of North Terminal and is adjacent to Concourse D skytrain station 3, for quick access from any of the 47 gates in North Terminal within four minutes. Upon arrival at the new FIS facility, international travelers will be greeted by a passport control area featuring 78 lanes that can process 2,000 passengers per hour. MIA is also among a select group of U.S. airports with six dedicated lanes for Global Entry, which provides expedited processing for travelers who have registered with U.S. Customs and Border Protection. Once processed, passengers will collect their checked bags in a spacious new second-level baggage claim area and then exit on either the second level for connecting flights or to the first level greeter’s lobby. Befitting for the top international gateway to the U.S., the terrazzo floor of the new greeter’s lobby features a rendering of the globe titled “Gateway of the World.” North Terminal’s new FIS facility opens at a time when visitors to Miami-Dade County are at record-breaking numbers. MIA is now the top U.S. airport for international flights, with nearly 1,300 weekly flights serving 85 international destinations. With American Airlines and American Eagle combining to handle nearly 70 percent of MIA’s passengers, and with 95 percent of Miami-Dade County’s visitors arriving through MIA, the new North Terminal FIS facility will soon be the County’s main front door to the world.
