Yoko Ono. Half A Wind Show. A Retrospective – Schirn Kunsthalle Frankfurt – From 15th February to 12th May 2013

Yoko Ono has gained worldwide renown as one of the most influential artists of our time. On the occasion of her 80th birthday, SCHIRN Kunsthalle is putting on show a comprehensive retrospective of her work. Yoko Ono originally gained fame with her trend-setting artworks of the early 1960s, which were first presented in New York and later in Japan. This exhibition draws special attention to Yoko Ono’s work of the 1960s and 1970s, her influence on the Fluxus movement, concept and performance art, the environment, film, music, her peace-promoting activities as well as her commitment to paving the way for her groundbreaking ideas.

Spring Dippemess – Ratsweg Fairground – From 22nd March to 14th April 2013

The Dippemess folk fair ranks at the very top of the Rhine-Main region’s fun festivals. No other fair attracts a greater number of visitors with its vast variety of merry-go-rounds and high-tech rides. The colourful fringe programme, which takes place in the party pavilion, offers plenty of festive atmosphere, while exciting rides provide fun for the entire family and countless food and beverage stalls ensure fair visitors do not go hungry or thirsty. The springtime version of this traditional festival is the perfect event for those who enjoy breathtaking amusement rides, with this year’s motto being “Higher! Further! Faster!”

Wäldchestag – Oberforsthaus, Municipal Forest – From 18th May to 21st May 2013

Frankfurt is the only city to celebrate the Whitsuntide with a special forest festival. On the Tuesday after the Pentecost, Frankfurt denizens traditionally drop what they are doing at stroke of midday and head out to the city forest to celebrate their beautiful woodland. This time-honoured festival, held in one of Germany’s largest city forests, dates back several centuries. Merry-go-rounds and high-tech rides, live music and cosy summer gardens under canopies of green offer fun and entertainment for young and old.

What Frankfurt is talking about

Hotel Steigenberger Frankfurter Hof gets a facelift

Comprehensively renovated and modernised, Frankfurt’s 150-year-old “grand hotel” has welcomed many famous celebrities over the years, including Thomas Mann and Yoko Ono. In February, the establishment opened its brand-new in-house spa, a serene and beautiful place where guests have the opportunity to take some rest from the daily grind. Those seeking relaxation and recuperation will find precisely what they are looking for on over 1,000 square metres of floor space. The spa consists of a vast sauna landscape including a Turkish “Hamam” steam bath, various treatment rooms, a private spa suite as well as an original men’s barber shop that calls to mind the traditional European men’s salons of bygone times. The operator of the spa is the Bangkok-based company “Goco Hospitality”, who are well known throughout all of Asia.

Liebeskind Berlin now available in Frankfurt

At the end of last year, the Berlin-based fashion label “Liebeskind” opened up a flagship store on Frankfurt’s posh Schillerstraße, just around the corner from the Hauptwache. Wares include many trendy accessories that serve as daily companions through the urban jungle. The offer range comprises primarily leather goods as well as scarves, shawls, kerchiefs and clothing.

Primark – Looking good for less

As of 14th February, fashion enthusiasts have a new store to head to on the Zeil, Germany’s top-selling shopping promenade. The new designer store of the Irish fashion chain PRIMARK is the second of its kind in Frankfurt, inviting shoppers with its popular motto, “Looking good for less!”

Vegan products from Veganz

Frankfurt is now the second location of the vegan full-line distributor, Veganz, and the second supermarket in Europe to implement such a concept. Its motto is simple: “We love life.” The founder, Jan Bredack, established the business only after having done in-depth research on suitable producers and suppliers in Berlin, site of the first store. The Frankfurt store is managed by Olivera Miloradovic. At home in the city district of Bornheim, it offers everything one would find in conventional supermarkets, only vegan and minus all the animal by-products and additives.

Only in Frankfurt

“The Frankfurt Tip” by Ines Philipp, Project Manager, TCF Press and PR Dept.

Culinary delights from across the globe

From regional wines and traditional German bread to Italian olive oil and far-eastern spices, the merchants at the Frankfurt Kleinmarkthalle – the city’s time-honoured indoor market hall – offer everything an ambitious hobby cook could possibly want, in the highest quality and at very affordable prices. Those with a bit more time might be inclined to try one of the rustic meals on offer at the market’s restaurant, such as a traditional beef sausage, accompanied by a glass of wine, ideally enjoyed on the open-air terrace.
